Russia: Elista

Elista (Russian: Элиста) is the capital city of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia with a Population of 103,749. It is the only region in Europe where Buddhism is practiced by a plurality of the population. It has become well known as an international center for chess. Its former President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is the head of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). As you see on the cards, the town center has a number of renovated public parks focused on the main square, boasting statues to both Lenin and the Buddha.
